There are thousands of PR firms throughout the United States. Only a portion specialize in select industries, and an even smaller segment truly specialize in the B2B technology market. Finding a top PR firm that already knows your market segment and is custom built for your stage of growth can avoid mistakes and give you a competitive edge. Some agencies are owned by large holding companies backed by private equity or public ownership. Others are independent: privately owned and often founder-owned or driven. This is our curated list of independent B2B tech PR firms to consider for your communications needs – and why.

So Many Choices

Let’s begin with the obvious: A PR firm that specializes in beauty and fashion probably isn’t the right choice for your enterprise technology, AI or cybersecurity brand. Screening for market specialization saves hours of time vetting agencies that have no business representing your business to B2B technology buyers.

Next, even within a list of technology PR firms, you will find a wide variety of sub-specializations, locations, service models and firm structures.

Sub-specializations

Some tech firms lean toward consumer buyers (think laptops, phones, wearables, smart home, fitness); others to B2B markets (cybersecurity, cloud computing, networking, AI, data & analytics, enterprise software, hardware, semiconductors); and still others to specialized buyers like government agencies (B2G) or the public sector more broadly (public utilities, K12 schools, public safety). Find a firm that already knows your customer well, and you won’t have to pay them to learn.

Locations

Geography is far less important these days, but understanding an agency’s team concentration or distribution can help you foresee how you will work with them and what reach they will have. Generally, a U.S.-based tech PR agency is going to do well with U.S. media, no matter where members of the PR team are based. Reaching beyond the U.S. requires some connections. Global agencies can often serve a single client from multiple offices, which requires a hefty budget. Small and mid-sized agencies can be equally or even more effective for less money through high quality global partnerships such as The Worldcom Public Relations Group.

Service models

This is where agency selection gets really interesting. Are you looking only to manage a pipeline of announcements? Are you looking for an ideas factory? Is earned media your primary objective, or is it a full complement of earned, paid and digital communications? Do you need crisis expertise? Is your industry highly regulated or require public policy expertise? Do you need marketing programs? Different agencies have different service offerings and talent groups to address some or all of the above. Many of the questions about service models often arise from which stage of growth you are in and what kind of in-house team you already have. It’s best to ask questions about the types of clients an agency has, and what services the agency is built to deliver, then map it to what you need today and tomorrow.

PR firm structure and culture

The largest, global agencies are often holdings of even larger conglomerates, so leadership focuses the majority of its time on margins and growth, and often on managing a vast array of business units while fighting off fierce competition for multimillion-dollar clients. While these firms are built for global brands requiring scale and vast differentiation of services from a single provider, it may also impact billing rates, as well as how employees see their relationship with their employer. Independent firms are known for fewer layers between leadership and client work, leaner processes and custom work, plus founder-driven culture, which increases employee retention.

A deeper dive: how to find and hire a B2B Tech PR firm

Regardless of your preference for a global behemoth or a highly specialized PR firm partner, knowing how to avoid the common mistakes and surfacing the best agency for your needs can save months, or maybe years, of mediocre public relations results. Follow these steps to confidently locate and onboard a new PR firm partner:

  1. Ask around. Chances are good your peers in other companies have first hand experience. Additionally, use the table above, or go to common directories such as The Worldcom Public Relations Group or O’Dwyers, to zero in on a short list of firms that demonstrate evidence they understand the B2B tech market and have the services you need. Look for signals such as relevant content on their website, as well as on their social feeds.
  2. Reach out! Give firms your basic parameters: why you are searching for a PR firm now, what services you are most interested in and your timeframe for onboarding a new partner. Ask about budget ranges and, if possible, provide a range you are considering.
  3. Interview firms. Note this is different than sending out a RFP. You can read more about the pros and cons of RFP’s here, as well as the alternate approach, an RFI, here. Note: Chemistry is difficult to assess early in your search process but is an essential factor in long-term partnership and success. This is because all long-term partnerships like this are built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared understanding.
  4. If you find one you feel confident in, go for it. Set up the terms of the engagement. Otherwise, invite no more than a few firms to pitch in person. Make sure they understand your budget parameters BEFORE asking them to invest the time; otherwise, you will receive wildly different pitches and not be able to adequately compare them. You may also lose the interest of qualified firms without providing budget guidance.
  5. Notify your chosen firm and negotiate a contract. Congratulations! You have just saved a lot of time and selected a PR partner specializing in B2B tech and well-suited to help you achieve your business goals.

A final note: A PR firm is a trusted and strategic partner — not just a vendor or, worse, a vending machine. Don’t get so focused on grading firms based on specific criteria that you overlook business chemistry. Choose a partner who cares about you personally, your success in your job and your organization’s mission. Make sure you can see yourself working with the agency team day in and day out — exchanging ideas freely, seeking counsel during hard moments, and celebrating the big PR wins together.
