Black History Month has ended, but we want to continue celebrating Black media trailblazers every day — especially those who are advancing important conversations and helping build a more diverse and inclusive industry.

This month, we wanted to shine a light on a few podcasts with Black hosts and journalists who have contributed to the growing presence of diverse voices and perspectives in the media. We hope that by bringing additional awareness to these shows they will become new additions to your favorites list — and that you’ll share them with others.

Still Processing

Two Black culture writers for The New York Times, Wesley Morris and Jenna Wortham, tackle American culture on this weekly podcast show. Morris and Wortham take important social issues and invite you into a casual conversation about trending television, film, books and music topics. Wesley Morris was a film critic at The Boston Globe before he became a culture critic at The New York Times in 2015. Jenna Wortham is a staff writer at The New York Times and co-edited “Black Futures,” an anthology of Black art, writing and other creative work. The new season of Still Processing premieres on March 18th.

Code Switch

For years, Gene Demby and Shereen Marisol Meraji co-hosted this NPR podcast, which examines a range of topics, including food, history, pop culture and issues around race, ethnicity and identity. Since Meraji’s departure, Demby has been hosting the show with support from a team of dedicated journalists. Demby started his career as an assistant at The New York Times before helping the launch of Huffington Post’s Black Voices vertical. “Code Switch” was named Apple Podcasts’ first-ever Show of the Year in 2020 as a result of its important work.

Pod Save the People

This podcast is hosted by DeRay Mckesson, with analysis from Black news contributors De’Ara Balenger, Kaya Henderson, and Myles E. Johnson, who each bring a unique perspective on culture and social justice news. Each episode focuses on often overlooked news stories specifically impacting people of color. Special guests include experts, influencers, and diverse local and national leaders who dive deep into social, political and cultural issues. DeRay Mckesson is a civil rights activist at the forefront of equity and innovation issues. Additionally, Mckesson is a community organizer and a powerful voice in the Black Lives Matter movement.

All three podcasts are available on common streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.
