Media interviews present a golden opportunity for a CEO or spokesperson to get their company’s positive message out there. This is the primary reason people talk to the media, other than to control a crisis. If done correctly, a well-trained spokesperson can navigate even the most challenging questions. The old adage “practice makes perfect” rings true when it comes to media interviews.
The New Year is a good time to give your media spokespeople a refresher. At RH Strategic we work with a number of clients to help prepare executives to speak with the media and feel confident in the messages they are delivering. We arm them with the tools to tackle tough questions and ensure they are getting out the message they want.
While I can’t give away all of the secrets we pack into our media training arsenal, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
3 Tips for Media Interviews
- You should know as much about the reporter and publication as possible prior to the interview. A good PR firm will equip you with a summary of the reporter and publication and past relevant coverage. It can be nice to find a personal connection between you and the reporter. Did you graduate from the same college? Grow up in the same city? Both passionate Seahawks fans? This helps to build a rapport with the reporter.
- Prior to an interview, make sure you list your key messages out. In the case of a phone interview, you can refer to your notes which can be helpful.
- Practice is truly key to winning the media game. Go into each interview well prepared. If possible ask for a list of questions in advance, or brainstorm a list of anticipated questions. Practice your prepared responses out loud.
