In 2014, we wrote a blog introducing readers to the top 11 cybersecurity reporters at that time. Much has changed in the past five years.

Cybersecurity has evolved to protect businesses and individuals from the ever-shifting threat landscape. Today, cybersecurity experts are focused on deepfakes, quantum computing and increasing regulation, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Other cyber-related issues include the lack of diversity in tech, the struggle to feed the talent pipeline, and the need for greater diversity and investment in STEM education.

So, who are the top reporters covering these issues? We’ve put together a list of 16 reporters who write about the biggest cyber news, with a particular focus on policy issues and the hottest new tech. Some of the names will be familiar – in reviewing our 2014 list, we realized some of the reporters included were still among the biggest names in the beat. Most of the names are new, though, and represent the increased depth and diversity of the field.

  • Tami Abdollah, AP, @latams: Tami covers cybersecurity, national security and election security for AP’s DC bureau. A majority of Tami’s stories are of national or global concern.
  • Joe Uchill, Axios, @JoeUchill: Joe covers cybersecurity for Axios and writes the outlet’s weekly “Codebook” newsletter, which highlights recent cybersecurity research, breaches and more.
  • Kate Fazzini, CNBC, @KateFazzini: Kate is the cybersecurity reporter for CNBC and recently published the book “Kingdom of Lies: Unnerving Adventures in the World of Cybercrime.” She has expertise in cybersecurity for business, government and cyber intelligence.
  • Alfred Ng, CNET, @alfredwkng: Alfred is a breaking news staff reporter for CNET but also focuses on security and privacy. He previously wrote for the New York Daily News.
  • Jeff Stone, CyberScoop, @jeffstone500: Jeff is the associate editor of CyberScoop, where he covers business and legal topics in cybersecurity. Previously, he covered cybersecurity at the Wall Street Journal.
  • Kelly Jackson Higgins, Dark Reading, @kjhiggins: Kelly is the executive editor at Dark Reading and a veteran in technology and business journalism. She has more than two decades of experience.
  • Rob Pegoraro, Freelance, @robpegoraro: A consumer tech veteran of The Washington Post with columns in USA Today and Yahoo! Tech, Rob is a well-respected source for security and broader tech news, with a special touch for writing about the actual technology behind these issues.
  • Charlie Mitchell, Inside Cybersecurity, @CharlieReports: Charlie’s focus at the intersection of cybersecurity, politics and policy is of great interest to his Inside Washington Publisher’s readers. He has previously held positions at publications such as Roll Call and National Journal.
  • Brian Krebs, Krebs on Security, @briankrebs: A former reporter for The Washington Post, Brian Krebs posts on a near-daily basis on corporate, healthcare and government IT security news, as well as cybersecurity best practices.
  • Nicole Perlroth, The New York Times, @nicoleperlroth: A San Francisco-based The New York Times reporter who formerly covered venture capital and startups and now covers trending privacy and cybersecurity topics.
  • Tim Starks, Politico, @timstarks: Tim is the cybersecurity reporter for Politico and writes for its daily “Morning Cybersecurity” newsletter. Tim has written about cybersecurity for over a decade and previously covered homeland security for Congressional Quarterly.
  • Byron Acohido, USA Today, @byronacohido: One of the nation’s most respected cybersecurity journalists, Byron has been covering consumer and enterprise cybersecurity for more than 10 years at USA Today from his perch in Seattle.
  • Dustin Volz, The Wall Street Journal, @dnvolz: Dustin covers cyber and intelligence for the WSJ, with a focus on election security, hacking and other hot button issues in the beltway.
  • Joe Marks, The Washington Post, @Joseph_Marks_: Joe Marks covers cybersecurity and is the author of The Washington Post’s “Cybersecurity 202,” a daily newsletter covering the top cybersecurity policy news of the day.
  • Ellen Nakashima, The Washington Post, @nakashimae: A cybersecurity luminary and 19-year veteran of The Washington Post, Ellen Nakashima covers issues relating to military and cyber intelligence, the NSA and other three-letter agencies, and high-profile cybercrime incidents or attacks.
  • Lily Hay Newman, WIRED, @lilyhnewman: Lily is the security reporter for WIRED, focusing on information security, digital privacy and hacking. Lily also wrote for Slate and had work in Gizmodo, Fast Company, IEEE and Popular Mechanics.
